A simple fall indoor-air reset for Lehigh Valley homes

Three practical ways to manage dust, moisture, and filters as cooler weather brings more time indoors.

A bright, cared-for home

As cooler days arrive, a few focused tasks can help your home feel fresher without turning the weekend into a full deep clean. The goal is to remove settled dust, keep moisture in check, and get your heating-season basics ready.

1. Work from high to low with a damp cloth. Start with shelves, lamp bases, window sills, and other dust-catching surfaces, then vacuum floors and upholstered furniture. The EPA recommends damp dusting because it helps keep settled dust from returning to the air.

2. Check filters and airflow. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for cleaning or replacing filters in your heating system and portable air cleaners. While you are there, make sure supply and return vents are not blocked by furniture, baskets, or curtains.

3. Watch for fall moisture. Check bathroom corners, window areas, and the space around sinks for condensation, dampness, or small leaks. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30% and 50% when possible and addressing water problems promptly.

Local note: Upper Saucon Township has announced a household hazardous-waste collection event for township residents on October 31, 2026, from 8 a.m. to noon at Hopewell Park. Registration is required. If a cabinet cleanout turns up old household chemicals, keep products in their original containers, follow the event instructions, and never mix cleaners. Residents elsewhere should check their own municipality or county program before setting anything out.
