A simple fall reset for your entryway and living spaces

Three small cleaning habits can help keep tracked-in dirt and settled dust manageable as the season changes.

A bright, cared-for home

Fall often means more trips through the door with shoes, bags, and jackets. A short reset at the entry and in the rooms you use most can make weekly cleaning easier.

1. Give dirt a stopping place. Set a washable mat by the door and a tray or basket for shoes. Shake out or wash the mat as needed, then clean the floor just inside the entrance. The EPA notes that outdoor soil and dust can be tracked indoors.

2. Catch dust gently. Wipe shelves, tables, and other frequently used surfaces with a damp cloth before cleaning the floor. The EPA recommends damp dusting because it helps keep settled dust from returning to the air. Vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture regularly, giving extra attention to the places people gather.

3. Check the filter while you reset. If your home has a central heating and cooling system or portable air cleaner, check its filter and follow the manufacturer’s replacement instructions. A clean, suitable filter is one part of managing indoor particles; choose a filter compatible with your system.
